About Paola Pomponi
Let me tell you about me, my training and how I work.
I come from a business background and this, together my life experience and clinical practice, makes me very much aware and sympathetic with the fast pace of contemporary life and all the consequent anxiety, fatigue and, at times, loss of direction that can be the result of a high profile career and demanding business activity.
I am originally from Italy and have lived in the UK for more than 30 years. For this reason I can provide Psychotherapy in both English and Italian. I also have a good understanding of Spanish and French and I am am happy to allow my clients to use those languages if they feel more at ease, although I would conduct my own interventions in either English or Italian. A multi-lingual session can be an interesting experience!
I trained at the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology, Regent’s College, London. I hold a Masters Degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy and an Advanced Diploma in Existential Psychotherapy (ADEP). The subject of my dissertation was “The Age of Opportunities?” – a study of the transition into mid-
I hold a Diploma in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy. This diploma makes me competent in working with couples and addressing issues concerning relationships and sexuality.
I am trained in CBT ( Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which I implement as part of my Existential orientation.
I am a trained EMDR Practitioner, having completed parts 1,2 and 3 of EMDR Training, in London, with Alexandra Richman and Laura Parnell. I integrate sessions of EMDR, in the context of my normal therapy, especially – but not only – in order to address issues connected to PTSD, panic attacks, fears and psychological blockages – if and when appropriate. I am a Member of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland.
I am a Certified Psychological Mediator and hold a Diploma issued by Regent’s College, London, in 2012.
From April 2014 until January 2018 I joined MacMillan Cancer Support as a voluntary Psychotherapist in order to offer psychological support to people affected by cancer and who may be terminally ill, as well as their families and carers. I worked at the MacMillan office in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Chelsea.
In January 2018 I joined Breast Cancer Haven in Fulham Broadway.
Although I am always striving to acquire new skills and expertise, my basic orientation is based on Existential Psychotherapy and the aim of my work is to facilitate my clients’ growth, development and change, during young, middle and later stages of life. I believe that opportunities are plentiful and that therapy can help identify them and find pathways to improve the quality of one’s life.
In connection with the world of Existentialsm, I have the opportunity of keeping active on a volutary way, as Vice-Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis, based in London.
I approach my clients with respect and care and I draw from my personal experience in order to assess and set realistic goals. I have acquired extensive knowledge about different existential dilemmas and issues and I approach each client in a committed and personal way.
I listen and relate to my clients in a non-
I am the President of a voluntary charitable organisation VVI- Visitatori Volontari Italiani ( www.vvi.org.uk) which provides assistance and psychological help to Italians resident in UK, who may be experiencing difficult times through illness, bereavement, criminal involvement etc. The Association provides Visits and one to one assistance under the patronage of the Italian Consulate General in London.
In the present international climate of political change, an increasing number of people from all walks of life are experiencing the opportunity to observe their relation to the outside world from a new perspective, ask questions and widen the spectrum of possibilities.
It isn’t alway easy to do this, and when times are uncertain there may be a sense of loss, of meaninglessness, fear and tiredness. Making changes or even just contemplating possibilities is no easy task. Psychological support may be beneficial to understand what, if anything needs updating, and which steps may be necessary to transform uncertainty into opportunity.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the service that I provide or would like to talk about your therapy needs.
